From Rick & Mary

"In the beginning God..." Gen 1:1
Let us remember, in the beginning of everyday of our lives God is.  It is a privilege for me to share what He is doing in Isabel's life.

  • The trach is removed!  Thank you God!
  • Isabel continues to make progress in the movements of her left and right arms and hands.  Therapists are excited about her progress.
  • Today in PT Isabel was able to roll over to her side (left and right) lying down.  With assistance, she took some steps while standing.
  • In speech therapy the therapist Katie asked Isabel, "What has many pages, is read and has a hard or soft cover?"  Isabel said, "Bible".
  • Isabel has been working so hard in therapy.  I asked her the other day if she is trusting in God and she nodded yes.  While in her room after a full day of therapy she initiated,  "I'm trying to get to bed.".
  • I spoke with Isabel's caseworker today and the insurance is easing up a bit, approving two days at a time in lieu of one day.  Yeah!
  • Isabel met with Dr. Levy, the neurosurgeon yesterday. From the CT scan from last Wednesday he observed some bleeding in the brain and adjusted the shunt in her skull, increasing the amount of drainage.  He wants to see her in a month.  He encouraged us to go see her nurses from St. Clare's and we did.  It was great to show them God's amazing goodness toward Isabel and us.
Prayers:

For Isabel's safety during the night.  The law requires that one rail of the bed be down, however Isabel is squirming and fidgeting quite a bit and we don't want her falling out of the bed!

  1. Hello. I'm so pleased to hear that Dr. Levy is following up on Isabel. I like him. And also, he does good work. I'm glad you went back to see the nurses in the Neuro ICU, too. I bet that was nice. Many of them were exceedingly kind to me (and also excessively patient and even enthusiastic with all my questions about what everything does and what everything means).

Is it okay to ask why one rail of her bed must be down? Why does the law require it?

    Take care.

  2. Yeah, seriously! I have the same question Jessica has. What the heck?! We need a patient and enthusiastic nurse to tell us that answer ;)

  3. It's part of the pendulum swing away from any form of active medical involvement that would override the right of an individual's dignity. There are always circumstances when some forms of restraint make sense (and are specifically requested by either the patient or family members), but our laws are increasingly inflexible to insure compliance. We now need a bureacracy to tell us when we can have bed rails up or down and how many.

  4. If there were not (a certain few) medical caretakers who abused the use of restraint against the vulnerable, there would be no need for such bureaucracy or laws. So, perhaps the bureaucracy is only a side-effect of the root cause.... which is the sin in the heart of not loving our brother or sister as Christ loved us.

Unfortunately most people aren't interested in fixing their sin problems. And we can't create the solution to our own sin problems.... just about the best we can manage is to create laws.

So that is what we do. I don't find it surprising that this law, in this instance, keeps Isabel from getting one type of care she needs. Although it is frustrating, I don't personally find it surprising. It's a human attempt to fix sin. It doesn't surprise me at all that it isn't working well.

Just more proof that we need God, and we can't be God for ourselves.

Oh sweet Lord Jesus, we can't even get the bed rails right when we try to do things on our own. See, how greatly we need you.

  5. Sweet Grayson was playing in his room tonight and singing a song about how he loved Isabel and wanted her to get better. I love that all of these children are lifting her up with the rest of us. Hope today was a good day and I will be in prayer for tonight.
